The “Scuola Secondaria di Primo Grado “G. Galilei” is a large secondary school set on the central Tuscany coast in the province of Leghorn, attended by 980 students aged 11-14, organized into 44 classes. The school has three different locations, two of them set in the Municipality of Cecina and one in the Municipality of Bibbona. 112 students of non-Italian nationality are attending our school, coming from 26 different countries. The percentage of students with foreign citizenship amounts to 11,4 %. Among these, many have already acquired basic literacy in Italian. Nevertheless, they need specific curriculum support to improve their use of Italian as second language in learning specific subjects and to be fully integrated in our institution and local communities. An increase of children coming from refugees or asylum-seekers is foreseen for the next years, since our area has been receiving an increasing number of migrants, now hosted in “reception centres for immigrants and asylum seekers” (centri di prima accoglienza) and in the SPRAR project in the area (Service for the Protections of refugees and asylum-seekers).
Our general goal is to provide an answer as school to the challenges of the increasing migrations towards Europe, Italy being one of the main actors on the scene because of its geographical position. Therefore, we aim at enhancing the integration of all disadvantaged students, including the children of recent or very recent immigrants, and among them refugees or asylum-seekers, preventing intolerance, discrimination and racism, thus creating a cohesive and inclusive local community.

ABOUT USLa Scuola Secondaria di Primo Grado “G.
